Furies Sexuelles / Prostitution Clandestine - Movie Review:

French director Alain Payet started making adult films in the 1970's and continued directing into the 2000's. By the time he passed away in 2007, he had over 130 credits to his name and had worked for many of Europe's largest adult film companies. Vinegar Syndrome, through their Peekarama line, present his two earliest adult films, both produced by regular Jess Franco producer Robert de Nesle, uncut on home video for the first time.

    Furies Sexuelles:

Corinne Lemoine plays Marie-Madeleine, a single mother who, when we first meet her, is in the hospital, he wrists bandaged up after a failed suicide attempt. As she lies in bed, she looks back on what happened to bring her to this point in her life. We learn first how she worked in a lingerie shop only to lose her job when she's won't have sex with a lecherous customer who her boss wants her to give some special treatment to.

Later that night, when she learns her daughter has already gone to bed, she goes out to a bar where she hooks up with a man (Richard Allen). They go back to her place and have sex and the next morning she wakes up and finds he's split and left her a pile of cash to pay for her services. While Marie-Madeleine never intended to prostitute herself, a buxom hooker friend of hers from the shop (Cecile Carole) tells her it isn't such a bad way to make a living. Before you know it, Marie-Madeleine is working as a 'hostess' at a bar that caters in providing wealthy men with attractive female companions. For an extra fee, these men can even take the women upstairs to a bedroom and have sex with them. Marie-Madeleine takes to her new job rather well, though initially she needs to drink a fair bit to work up the courage to do what she needs to do.

Soon enough, Marie-Madeleine is making good money but it doesn't take long before she's being dragged from one progressively kinkier situation into another, her increasingly fragile psyche threatening to crack any day now….

At one-hundred-and-six-minutes in length, Furies Sexuelles is a bit longer than it really needs to be, the final orgy taking up way too much of the film's running time. Otherwise, this is a decent movie, a character study more than anything else. The sex is often times less than erotic, Marie-Madeleine's hooker friend clearly not enjoying herself when she works her trade and Marie-Madeleine herself getting broken and degraded more than one throughout the film.

A fairly depressing film, Furies Sexuelles is, regardless, quiet well made. The acting is very strong, with leading lady Corinne Lemoine doing an excellent job of creating an interesting character. She's beautiful to look at, which is obviously important in a XXX movie, but in addition to that she handles the dramatic aspects of this movie (which are a lot more demanding than your average adult film from the era) very well. Richard Allen is also very good here in his supporting role, and Cecile Carole is quite strong in her supporting role as Marie-Madeleine's prostitute friend.

The film also makes use of some neat locations. For example, the bar where much of the second half of the storyline plays out is a seriously cool looking set. The film also features some unexpected hardcore gay sex that takes place while two men watch as a pair of prostitutes whips a naked and bound woman. Production values are pretty strong across the board, with some nice cinematography employed throughout, the dock a point or two for overuse of some very repetitious music on the score.

    Prostitution Clandestine:

The second feature on the disc features an opening credits sequence where a very attractive naked lady struts her stuff in front of a camera. When the photographer gets handsy, she pushes him away but then offers to have sex with him for money. He agrees and she goes down on him while a funny little dog named Venga looks on confused. This woman is Claudine (Claudine Beccarie) and it's clear that this wasn't her first time having sex for money. Her male companion leaves and she takes a phone call to make an appointment for another client the next day. Just as Claudine is about to relax for the day, he friend Martine shows up to remind her that they have a date! They arrive at a man's apartment where he sets up some photography gear and gets them to undress for another photo session, one that involves rad lesbian sex. See, Claudine and Martine may appear, on the surface, to work as legitimate, if frequently very nude, models - but the truth is, the make their real money turning tricks for horny and affluent male shutterbugs who contact them through the ads that they place in magazines and newspaper that advertise for sexy lingerie modelling.

From there, they call a man named Dany for a ride but he doesn't answer as he's too busy having sex with a curly-haired blonde. Claudine makes another appointment for that night, but then realizes that she can't do it. Since the client only knows Claudine is a brunette, she gets her friend Tania (Tania Busselier) to substitute for her at his hotel so that she can take yet another appointment with a TV newscaster and two of his female friends. They have rad lesbian sex and then he joins in with them. Elsewhere, a model named Pamela (Jess Franco regular Pamela Stanford, who gets very naked but doesn't actually get involved in the XXX activity) almost gets raped by a man who has a bow wrapped around his dong who late returns and begs her to castrate him, which understandably makes her want to quit. Martine makes love to her boyfriend, Tania makes another appointment with the trick at his hotel, an aged man (Robert Le Ray) pays a heavily sideburned photographer to take risqué photos of his wife Sylvia (Sylvia Bourdon) all of which eventually leads to a big old orgy where Robert Allan shows up and a lot of people get whipped and a weird naked old man kisses all of the ladies' feet before getting pissed on! Oh, and a guy with a dildo strapped to his nose shows up too.

Far more upbeat than the first feature, Prostitution Clandestine is light on plot but does offer some character development in the second half of the film as some of the girls that work with Claudine start to question if this is really how they want to make a living or not. For the most part though, this is an enjoyable and playful film that, if it isn't as well made on a dramatic level as the first feature, is a whole lot more fun. The cast all seem to be enjoying themselves and having fun together in bed, and Payet works enough kink into the story on a regular bases to keep things interesting - we get the aforementioned golden shower scene as well as some humorous cross dressing, foot fetish action, ass worship and plenty of standard bumping and grinding too.

Like the first feature, it's very nicely shot and makes some good use of some nice locations and interesting Parisian exteriors. The cinematography is top notch and the acting is quite good from everyone involved. The film offers up a nice mix of the humorous and the erotic, and in pretty equal measures at that, resulting in a fun and entertaining vintage sex film.

Furies Sexuelles / Prostitution Clandestine - Blu-ray Review:

Furies Sexuelles and Prostitution Clandestine arrive on Blu-ray from Peekarama framed at 1.66.1 widescreen in an AVC encoded 1080p high definition transfer “newly scanned & restored in 2k from their 35mm negatives.” The first feature gets 24GBs of space, the second feature 22.5GBs, both films share the same 50GB disc. Picture quality here is solid. Shadow detail could maybe be a little better in some of the darker scenes but otherwise, things shape up nicely. Color reproduction is excellent and black levels are strong. Skin tones look nice, always lifelike and natural, and there are no issues with any noise reduction or edge enhancement. Some minor print damage pops up here and there, as does the occasional scratch, but for the most part the picture quality is clean for both features.

Audio chores are handled by a 24-bit French language DTS-HD 2.0 Mono tracks. Optional subtitles are provided in English only. French language Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono tracks are also included. Audio quality is fine, no problems with any hiss or distortion to note. The levels are balanced nicely and the scores sound quite good.

The main extra on the disc is Richard Allan On Furies Sexuelles, an interview with the storied French porn actor. Here, over twenty-seven-minutes, he talks about how he got into doing adult films, working with Alain Payet, making his debut for Payet in a film called the Magic Lollipop, what made Payet unique as a filmmaker, some of the actresses that he worked with on these films, Payet's appreciation for big breasts and his taste for violence, how Allen almost directed a feature film with a transvestite friend of his, how much he appreciated working with Corinne Lemoine (who he describes as quite reserved), how senior citizen Robert Le Ray wound up in the film, Carmelo Petix's gay exploits on and off the screen, how the adult movie industry changed over the years, how money made from adult films wound up financing mainstream films in France, his thoughts on current gonzo porno, working with the aristocratic Robert de Nesle, Payet's passing and the effect it had on him and more.

Also included on the disc is a bonus scene from the Belgium version of Furies Sexuelles. This scene was never edited into the negative and so it's' presented separately. It's a five-minute segment in which a strange man in a trench coat wearing heavy makeup arrives in a room with a prostitute only to open a case with some strange custom pieces in it. He puts an Indian headdress on her, gives her a ball of twine to hold and cackles as he undresses, after which he has her tie him up and drag him around the room while he makes bizarre noises. Before it's all over she shoves a leek up his ass as he howls like a wolf!

Aside from that, the disc also includes an original theatrical trailer for Furies Sexuelles, a still gallery, menus and chapter selection. It also comes packaged with some nice reversible cover art.

Furies Sexuelles / Prostitution Clandestine - The Final Word:

The Peekarama Blu-ray release of Furies Sexuelles / Prostitution Clandestine offers up two very different vintage XXX, both of which are definitely worth seeing, albeit for very different reasons, as we get solid acting from an attractive cast in both films with the first working as a dark but effective drama and the second as a much more lighthearted comedy. The Blu-ray release looks and sounds very good and the interview with Richard Allan is quite interesting. Recommended for fans of vintage erotic and classic French smut!
