The Movie:
Bookworm student Devin (Wiz Khalifa) is looking to get his life in full gear: he's working to be the Valedictorian, trying to get a scholarship to Yale, and is controlled by his spoiled girlfriend who is dictating his moves. He gets paired up for a science project with Mac (Snoop Dogg), the resident pot aficionado and BMOC for 15 years of high school. Gosh, these two couldn't be any more opposite, could they? Will they get along? Will can they get past their differences and complete the science project? One day in class Devin gets robbed by the snack machine and needs some food to raise his blood sugar. Mac comes to the rescue with some snacks, and after Devin unknowingly eats a pot-laced snack cake he and Snoop, er Mac, become fast friends.
They smoke more weed than any human can probably handle and Mac teaches Devin everything he knows about the ganja. Devin dumps his girl, gets tattooed, loses his cherry to a skanky ho, and everything's going fine. The science project is coming along, but never seems to quite work (it will, you know it will). But the friendship turns sour when they wind up in the slammer for possession, and it may never be the same for the two pot pals.
Let's cut out all the bullshit. This movie is fucking stupid, and it knows it. It even starts out with an animated joint named Slow Burn (voiced by Mystikal) who says don't watch the movie if you aren't high. This is a weed movie and proud of it. Slow Burn later pops up here and there for narration, some education, and unfunny jokes. In fact most of the jokes throughout the movie aren't very funny at all. Wiz does an ok job with his role, Snoop is himself (or so it would seem), Andy Milonakis shows up as a relatively unfunny pot head in a wheelchair, Mike Epps plays the math teacher and has a few decent moments. There's plenty of Snoop Dog/Wiz Khalifa tunes (and music videos) throughout if you're into that, a fart gag, and even a pair of boobs. And all this crammed into an hour. That's correct, this is an hour-long movie. The running time is 76 minutes, but 16 of that are the credits. During the credits they play behind the scenes footage and outtakes, which seems like a pretty desperate attempt at padding the time.
Still, the movie was entertaining enough to mindlessly sit through. It's start to finish dumb, and seems the filmmakers weren't going for anything more than just that. What keeps the movie from totally sucking is Snoop Dogg. He's an interesting guy, and he has a charisma about him that makes him easy to watch. This is his movie all the way and he looks really comfortable doing his thing.
But it's a stupid movie.
Video/Audio/Extras:
The disc delivers a crisp image with solid black levels, colors that really pop, and great detail. The 1080p hi-definition picture is very pleasing, with an aspect of 1.78:1. No grain is present, as it looks to be shot on digital. Authoring issues were not noticed. There's not much more to say; it looks really nice. Great job on a not-so-great movie. The audio a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track and the music sounds great on it with a solid bottom end. The surround isn't much used and most of the sound comes from the front, but the dialogue is clear the balance is good. The music's volume doesn't get too overbearing.
Only one extra (unless you count the end credits as an extra), and that's a commentary by the director and the two main actors, Snoop and Wiz. They claim to have smoked real dope on the entire shoot and only used faux weed a couple of times. It's probably true. It's an okay listen, but not really informative, and seems more like some friends talking about a movie someone paid them to make.
The Final Word:
It's nowhere near the upper shelf of weedsploitation flicks, but it's entertaining enough to give it a try if you're looking for something mindless to watch.
