  • The Shadow #25

    Released by: Dynamite Entertainment
    Released on: May 14, 2014

This is the final issue in the new storyline of Lamont Cranston's alter ego and it's a doozy. Starting with a fantastic cover from Alex Ross (as well as three other variants), this issue details The Shadow fighting an army of what would appear to be the undead!

    [SPOILER-HEAVY REVIEW FOLLOWS]

The story begins with Burbank, the central operator for all agents of The Shadow, who's under the strain of dozens of incoming reports. They all involve the apparent re-animation of the recently-deceased citizens of New York City and even prove too much for The Shadow himself who has to be airlifted to higher ground by gyrocopter.

The events have the police overwhelmed as well, all trying their best to both contain the infected and also to find out why this has happened. Since the outbreak's first reports came in from Chinatown it's there that The Shadow focuses his energies. He has an audience with Yat Soon, the Arbiter of Chinatown, who has also already been investigating as best he can what has happened. His main scientist has found certain chemical elements in the blood of the “undead” which provide potential clues to The Dark Avenger. Enough so that he has to mobilize his entire regiment of agents into action, to stop this deadly outbreak while he goes after its source.

The evil mistress behind all this has been using a toxin mixed into the laundry detergent her Chinese laundries use across the city, a toxin that puts those exposed under her command. She wants to overthrow all of society, it seems, and New York City's just the starting point. As she sends out another warning to the leaders of the city on the radio, though, it's The Shadow who responds, in person. Having disabled her transmitter he informs her that his agents have also intercepted all of her minions as well as the tainted detergent supply. He offers her a chance to surrender but, her life-long plans ruined, she decides to attack and learns the truth behind The Shadow's ultimatum, “The weed of crime bears bitter fruit…”

Written by Chris Roberson this story is pure vintage Shadow material: He's resolute, tireless, dedicated and focused as he has to be, matching the pure villainous plot and getting the upper-hand at the end. Likewise, the artwork by Giovanni Timpano is lush, detailed and 100% pulpy goodness. A fantastic end to this extremely well done version of the famous character.
