Goon knows he's got to get to Rigatti's men before they get to him, and with Frankie's help Goon gets a bead on the heavy hitters coming their way the bus the next day: on the 4 o'clock bus. So Goon sits and waits for them at the bus stop and to kill time he drinks beer and reads H.G. Wells' “The Island of Dr. Moreau” to help lighten his somber mood.

In what can be described as a very condensed comic book adaptation of the classic book, the words seem to speak directly to Goon, who puts himself in the same league as protagonist in Well's tale. Goon sees his own troubles and thoughts as parallel to those endured by Prendick, and with that in mind he sets forth to meet his 4:00 appointment at the bus stop. Goon's newfound wisdom might spell trouble for Rigatti's muscle. Scratch that….it WILL spell trouble for them.

The majority of the issue is the telling of Prendick's tale, which may be off-putting to someone looking to see what the The Goon is all about for the first time. Then again, if that sounds like you then you kind of deserve it for not reading this book before now. Powell's adaptation of Wells' classic is pretty fantastic, with those sections looking as though they are done entirely in pencil and no inks (although not being an artist, that's only a guess). It's enough of a difference to give contrast between the two stories, but similar enough to keep the mood dark and dreary in both worlds. Powell shows once again why his book is one of the best on the shelves.
