Massacre Video has, over the last few years, been slowly but surely building one of the most eclectic catalogues going. They’ve not only been issuing DVDs of movies like Orozco The Embalmer and the films of Chester Turner and Donald Farmer, but they’ve been a key player in the collector’s edition limited VHS market that has proven to be so popular in recent times. Massacre Video head honcho Louis Justin is the guy behind all of this, and he was cool enough to answer a few questions for us.

Rock! Shock! Pop! - How did you get your start in movie distribution and what inspired you to start Massacre Video in the first place?

    Louis Justin
    - The idea of distribution was always in the back of my head, but I simply did not have the funds to do it.

Josh Johnson, the director of the recently released VHS documentary Rewind This!, was cool enough to do an interview with Rock! Shock! Pop! to discuss the movie, the format that it covers, and the state of physical media in general. So without further ado…

    Rock! Shock! Pop! -
So Rewind This! is out on DVD now and it’s played some festivals and what not. How has the response been so far?

    Josh Johnson -
The response has been great. The reviews have been extremely positive and the audiences have been really enthusiastic. One of the most rewarding aspects of doing a festival tour with the film is seeing that it plays exactly the same everywhere, whether it’s showing in Boston or South Korea.

GWAR has been around a long time, lead vocalist Oderus Urungus swinging his rock n roll dong to and fro and covering audiences in blood, sweat and jizz for well over two decades at this point. Love’em or hate’em, they don’t really care. With their legacy in metal rightly established at this point, the band suffered a setback with the unexpected passing of Flattus Maximus but with new recruit Pustulus Maximus having replaced him on guitar, the band soldiers on. Their latest album, Battle Maximus, came out in September and before it hit the streets, Rock! Shock! Pop! was given the chance to interview vocalist Oderus Urungus. Of course, we jumped at the chance and then had to pester

Gary Meskil has been doing vocals and playing bass in Pro-Pain for a couple of decades now and the band continues to be a driving force in metal/hardcore. Their latest album, The Final Revolution, has just come out through SPV/Steamhammer and it’s pretty much exactly what you’d want from the band: loud, fast and incredibly pissed off sounding but still musically tight and heavy. David Gregory has paid his dues in this business. Though he’s best known these days for spearheading Severin Films, his resume is an impressive one what with his affiliation with Blue Underground, Anchor Bay to name just a few and then there are the features that he’s directed and a few excellent feature length documentaries as well. He’s a pretty busy guy to be sure, but not so busy that he couldn’t find the time to talk to us about how he got into the home video business, some of his greatest accomplishments and how and why Severin Films have come to do what they do so well.

So without further ado, let’s get to it.

Rock! Shock! Pop! - So before you started Severin Films, there was the UK wing of Blue Underground and a label you were involved with called Exploited. This was your start in the home video business, was it not? How did all of this come to be?

R!S!P! - So let’s start with a little background information – how did you get into cult films and more specifically, what lead to your interest in film and film restoration?

I think my becoming interested in film restoration came as a very direct result of my being into exploitation films. After all, these

Filmmaker Pazo Plaza has made a pretty serious name for himself in his native Spain and the success of the [REC] films have brought him to attention on the international and horror film circuits as well. IJ: Let’s start with a bit of background information. How did you get your start in the film industry?

PP: I started shooting short films in high school, kept on with that until producer Joan Ginard watched my short ABUELITOS and contacted me to begin working on a feature film that was SECOND NAME.

IJ: Most of your films have been horror movies – have you always been a horror fan? What directors would you say influenced you the most?

Horror and exploitation fans around the world know the name Norman J. Warren - a mainstay of the British film industry, Warren has had a prolific and fascinating career and was kind enough to alllow R!S!P!'s Ian Jane to pick his brain about his life in cinema. The results are as follows...

IJ - When did you first realize you wanted to make movies for a living, was there a certain film you saw that lit that spark?

NW - I’ve always found it difficult to remember when my interest in films first started, because I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in films. My mother was a great film fan and she took me to the cinema from a very young age. I loved watching all the films and never wanted them to end, but I also became fascinated by the dancing beam of light coming from the small window of the projection booth. I was always wondering what was going on in there, because I could see that was where the magic was coming from. When my aunt started work as an usherette at a local cinema and she asked the manager if I could visit the projection booth. I got to see a 35mm projector and reels of 35mm film for the very first time. I was hooked and for my

Ian Jane – At one point you worked as Media Blasters’ acquisitions person – what was that like? What were your accomplishments, regrets, disappointments, etc.?

Walter Olsen - Well, interestingly, this came about from another label whom I was helping with acquisitions that will remain nameless, wasn’t paying me anything, a few hundred dollars yearly, and they passed on a list of titles, so I noticed John Sirabella’s name pop up at the forums. So on a lark, I called him, we spoke, and I offered my services, and I stayed with him for couple of years.

Bruce McDonald is one of the coolest filmmakers to come from the Great White North in the last twenty years or so. With a filmography as varied and eclectic as you could imagine, he’s done everything from documentaries to road movies to horror films to televised teen soap operas and back again and managed to maintain an impressive level of quality and originality with his work.
