2018 was, by anyone’s standards, a damn fine year for cult film releases on home video – be it DVD, Blu-ray or 4k UHD. We here at Rock! Shock! Pop! have been lucky enough to review a lot of the really great releases that have come out in the last twelve months and hey, since it’s New Year’s Eve, why not take a look back at some of the best?

So without further ado, here are our favorite titles that we were able to write up this year, ranked in no particular order and based on the ever important mix of entertainment value and quality of the release itself.

Rock! Shock! Pop’s Top 20 Domestic Releases Of 2018:

Take It Out In Trade is a mess the way that a lot of Wood’s films were a mess but, like so many of his other efforts, it has that inexplicable charm and that weird passion for filmmaking on display and that keeps it interesting and entertaining

The last few years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of cult titles on DVD and especially Blu-ray and for fans, well, 2017 was an embarrassment of riches. We hear at R!S!P! have been privileged enough to have the opportunity to review a lot of the best and most interesting to come out this year, and with 2018 just a few short hours away, why not look back on the last twelve months?

So without further ado, here are our favorite titles that we were able to write up this year, ranked in no particular order and based on the ever important mix of entertainment value and quality of the release itself.

Rock! Shock! Pop’s Top 20 Domestic Releases Of 2017:

Blue Underground really rolled out the red carpet for their release of Deathdream, carrying over all of the extras from their previous DVD edition, adding a bunch of new supplements to the mix and presenting the film in excellent shape. As to the movie itself? Deathdream is an excellent film, a genuinely chilling horror picture that is really well made ...

Writing an article about a store visit isn’t something that we normally do around these here parts, but once in a while there is a reason to make an exception. Case in point? The guys that run Vinegar Syndrome have opened up a brick and mortar retail store called The Archive in Bridgeport, CT. Why does that matter to readers of this site? Because in an age where online sales seem to be killing

Friday the 13th is regarded as the big bad motherfucker of the Slasher movie sub-genre and not needing much in the way of introduction. Any horror fan has most likely seen most of the films in the franchise and has at least one favorite. The general public far and wide is at least aware of the franchise’s notoriety, an emphasis on sex and gore, and the series’ main antagonist Jason Voorhees AKA The Sultan if you’re a fan.

It’s a franchise heavily embedded in our culture. Being parodied too many times to count

The first, of what will hopefully be a recurring Five Points Festival kicked off yesterday at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side riverfront of New York City. The two day festival, curated by Clutter Magazine and presented Midtown Comics, “is a collision of toys, comics, and counterculture.” Unlike a regular comic or toy convention, Five Points focuses the more artisanal aspect of the toy and comic industry. As such, most of the attendees had a connection to indy or small press comics (though there were a few mainstreamers around too) and to the ‘designer toy’ industry.

Not only did this smaller scaled convention give fans a chance to interact with toy creators, artists, writers but it also gave them a chance to look for some exclusives, get items signed by comic and toy professionals, check out some amazing original art on display and peruse back issue vendors. On top of that, the outdoor area of the convention featured a half dozen food trucks and a selection of craft beers available for attendees over twenty-one. Hey, convention going

Physical media is dead. Long live physical media.

2015 saw an insane amount of product out from boutique labels, the kind that cult movie fans tend to go rabid for, and man oh man, did we ever cover a lot of them. Not all of them, we’re only human after all, but yeah, we wrote about a lot of DVD and Blu-ray releases this year. And with 2015 now, somehow, in the rear view mirror, what better time than this to look back on some of them?

So without further ado (and in no particular order)...

Rock! Shock! Pop’s Top Blu-ray And DVD Releases Of 2015:

The Films Of Frederick R. Friedel: Axe/Kidnapped Coed: Severin’s Blu-ray release of The Films Of Frederick R. Friedel: Axe/Kidnapped Coed is pretty much the definitive statement on these two pictures. Both films are really strong low budget pictures, both inspired and creative in their execution, worth of re-evaluation – this release is a fantastic way to do just that. The films hold up well, they look and sound quite good considering their origins and the extras do an amazing job of documenting both their respective histories and cultural significance. Don’t miss this one.

Eugenie… The Story Of Her Journey Into Perversion: Widely, and rightfully, regarded as one of Jess Franco’s most polished pictures and it’s hard to deny just what a great looking film this is. On top of that the cast all deliver fine work and the story is both

Love it or hate it, cosplay has exploded at conventions over the last few years and it’s now just as much a reason for some people to attend as the vendors and guests are. In fact, there are even ‘celebrity cosplayers’ showing up at cons these days, putting in special appearances and doing booth signings. So yeah, even if you don’t want to dress up for the day, you can’t ignore the fact that a whole lot of people do. High fives to Reed Pop for creating a safe and friendly environment for anyone and everyone to do their thing and have fun.

Here’s a few shots that show off the variety of costumes that were making the rounds at NYCC 2014.

Following up on yesterday’s post in which we basically just walked the floor, this second installment of our four part coverage of the 2014 New York Comic Con is going to focus on one thing and one thing only… TOYS! And hot damn are there a lot of them at the show this year, some of which are being shown for the first time, some of which are show exclusives and some of which are still being worked on. As you’ll see as you scroll through, there are toys of all kinds – licensed properties, original properties, new, vintage, some meant for kids and some for adult collectors. It’s all here. So let’s get to it…

Starting from The Block entrance, here we find some of the more esoteric ‘boutique’ toy makers. Are you in the market for some stuffed organs? That plush blue testicle you’ve always wanted is now ready for you to take him home!

NYC shop Toy Tokyo had their booth set up along the back wall, it was packed all weekend.

Plenty of other oddball vendors and distributors were set up here too…

Spanish toy maker SD Toys had a booth set up displaying some of their licensed stuff, like this ridiculously realistic looking Stan Lee figure!

They were also showing off Bettie Page and Blues Brothers figures alongside Steve McQueen, Charlie Chaplin and Marlon Brando from The Godfather!

Heading into the main hall from the back, there were some vintage toy vendors set up, offering up everything

It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that comic book conventions were exactly that – a bunch of people getting together to buy, sell, trade, discuss and celebrate the art form with liked minded individuals and fans. And while a lot of smaller conventions still hold true to this concept, it seems that more often than not these days the larger conventions are about a whole lot more than comics. Despite being called The San Diego Comic Con or The New York Comic Con, large shows like these tend to see the actual comic books get lost in the shuffle, buried beneath the media feeding frenzy that occurs when big Hollywood movie projects are announced or the cast of a popular Adult Swim show arrives to do a panel. This is all well and good,

To tell you the absolute truth, I hate going to concerts by myself.
