Modern Horror 2005 - 2015

I know this is vast and general, but with something like Oculus or The Babadook or It Follows generating a heightened level of interest every so often, it made me wonder if there is anything worthwhile going on in new school horror.

Thoughts? Rants? Analysis? Reflection?

For me, Let The Right One In, Teeth, The Loved Ones and now It Follows were all diamonds in the rough, but for the most part I dwell in the far past as opposed to recent past or the here and now. Haven't even seen Oculus or The Babadook yet...

I think most of the new studio horror is better than the indie stuff that's being produced right now.

I am sick and tired of all these indie, "fund me", limited edition, made on a shoestring with a half-assed idea, signed by the director dvd's and "collector's editions". Most of these movies suck, so why would I want a "limited, numbered edition" of garbage?

I know these movies have their fans, and more power to them, but I have no time for this crap. And that's what most of it is: crap.

Yeah, a rant and a list - good start. I figure a thread here would be preferable to any online or offline article or study I could find.

I didn't mean to just list indies though. For what it was (zombies as a 'suitable for all audiences' event film), I thought World War Z was okay. The Wolfman was a guilty pleasure, but I'm pretty sure I remember a completely unnecessary CGI bear. Another I should confess is The Devil's Rejects, although technically that's an indie, right? Also, Hostel, The Descent, Planet Terror and Argento's Mother Of Tears.

Just impulse-purchased The Babadook as well.

Cabin In The Woods was good fun...walking that fine line between clever and obnoxious. Other than that I'm coming up fairly dry on horror I've liked. What year was May? May was tops. The Babadook has it's share of flaws and has been massively overhyped but there's a lot good in it too.
