I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole

I could have sworn I started a thread about this the other day but maybe when the site went down for a few hours that thread went with it.

So yeah, this is a documentary about Wakefield Poole and it's probably pretty interesting stuff.

    Some more clips here.

We should cherish the lust film luminaries that are still with us as nary a month seems to go by without an obit. Wakefield's Boys in the Sand and Bijou were, are and forever will be essential adult viewing, historically important as well as hot, regardless of one's personal proclivities. His autobiography, Dirty Poole, made a terrific read too.

^ Glad to see you posting here, Dries. Your imdb reviews are indispensable. I have used them in my work a lot.

I was lucky enough to see this doc as part of an LGBTQ history event a couple of months back. It's wonderful. People were in tears by the end of it, and one guy described it as "beautiful," which it most certainly is.

Thanx Ashbee for the thumbs up!
I would love to see the doc and am not surprised that people found it "beautiful" as Wakefield's a beautiful person. This became clear to me, not just from his autobiography, but also that interview he did with Jerry Douglas for the Wakefield Poole Collection double DVD some years back. When asked (by Jerry) what it would take for him to come back to making adult films, he burst into tears and replied "a cure for AIDS". So much for pornographers not caring whose lives they put into danger as long as they can make a fast buck. Truth will out...

    For fans in Florida...

“After Wakefield Poole’s movies, mine are unnecessary and a little naive, don’t you think?” -Andy Warhol when asked by the NY Times why he stopped making movies like My Hustler and Lonesome Cowboys.

On March 26th we will be celebrating the life/work of a Jacksonville man who grew up here in the fifties, left town, toured with the Ballet RusseS, choreographed on Broadway, hung out with Liza and ended up making quite the name for himself with the creation of two gay art-house blue movies, Boys in the Sand and Bijou. Well, it turns out that Mr. Poole retired here and he will be joining us for a very special screening of his film Bijou from 1972. A film that screened at Telluride, Berlin and the Tel Aviv Festivals.

Also joining the party is another gay film-making maverick, Bruce LaBruce, who found Poole to be an early inspiration. LaBruce and Poole will be chatting about Poole’s life and career all while Bijou rolls by (Talkies style). After the screening, LaBruce will introduce his 1997 film, Hustler White which Boston Globe referred to as “Andy Warhol meets Robert Altman on LA’s Santa Monica Boulevard.”

Bijou screens at 7p.m. & Hustler White at 9p.m. You can see just Bijou for $10 or the price for the double feature is only $14. For tickets: http://tinyurl.com/ksn3k6s

Found this on FB via the VS group:

"Coming in February 2018, Wakefield Poole's three classic films (Boys in the Sand, Bijou, and Bible) in High Definition on Blu Ray. This will be an extremely limited edition, due to contractual obligations, of 50 copies, burned onto high quality, archival dual layer BD-Rs for long-lasting and error-free play. Including brand new extras, such as previously unseen short films and new interviews, this 3 Blu Ray set will feature a brand new 2K scan of Boys in the Sand from one of the better 16mm prints we've seen - better than the one used for the VS DVD release. Unfortunately, the original negative has deteriorated past the point of usability, so this will be the best version available for the foreseeable future. Pre-orders will start in February. Price has not yet been finalized. If you want to be added to an email list that gives you first chance at a discounted pre-order, send an email to info@gf-productions.com stating that you want to be added to the Wakefield Poole Blu Ray Set email list."

Well I hope I can get one of these but I sure wish they were real blu ray instead of BD-R but the fact that they are mastered in 2k makes it worth worthy of getting. Depending on the price that is lol.

It will be a real Blu Ray. As long as its the inorganic HTL (High to Low) type of BD-R, (which it almost certainly will be), it makes not a jot of difference. The LTH type was a cheaper version used in the infancy of Blu Ray.
