    Nikkatsu Mainstream Releases 1971-1988

I thought it would be interesting to try to create a list of mainstream movies produced by Nikkatsu (*) during their Roman Porno period, that is between 1971.11.20 and 1988.06.11. I'll start with the titles I can think of. Please help me update the list and correct any mistakes.

    * excluding TV films and movies where Nikkatsu may have participated in production but would not be considered the main producer (e.g. Kadokawa's Proof of a Man or ATG's Distant Thunder)

Men And War Pt. 3 (Sensou to ningen dai san bu) (1973) (Satsuo Yamamoto)
The Sun Falls And Rises Again (Hi wa shizumu hi wa noboru) (1973) (Koreyoshi Kurahara)
Portrait of a Flame (Honoo no shouzou) (1974) (Toshiya Fujita and Akira Kato)
The Red Lantern (Akachouchin) (1974) (Toshiya Fujita)
Sukeban Deka: Dirty Mary (Sukeban deka: daati Marii) (1974) (Yasuharu Hasebe)
Black Panther Bitch M (Kuroi mehyou emu) (1974) (Koretsugu Kurahara)
Younger Sister (Imouto) (1974) (Toshiya Fujita)
The Four Roughnecks (Abayo dachikou) (1974) (Yukihiro Sawada)
Virgin Blues (Baajin buruuzu) (1974) (Toshiya Fujita)
Cape Erimo (Erimomisaki) (1975) (Akira Kato)
Sachiko's Happiness (Sachiko no kou) (1976) (Kazunari Takeda)
Evening Primrose (Yoimachigusa) (1976) (Tatsumi Kumashiro)
Ah! That Pep Squad (Aa!! Hana no ouendan) (1976) (Chusei Sone)
Ah! That Pep Squad 2 (Aa!! Hana no ouendan 2) (1976) (Chusei Sone)
Ah! That Pep Squad 3 (Aa!! Hana no ouendan 3) (1977) (Chusei Sone)
The Baseball-Fan's Song (Yakyuukyou no uta) (1977) (Akira Kato)
Panic in High School (Koukou dai-panikku) (1978) (Sogo Ishii, Yukihiro Sawada)
Past Days Won't Return (Kaerazaru hibi) (1978) (Toshiya Fujita)
Eighteen Years of Age, to the Sea (Juuhassai, umi e) (1979) (Toshiya Fujita)
Super Gun Lady: Police Branch 82 (Sûpâ gun redei Wani Bunsho) (1979) (Chusei Sone)
I'm All Yours (Minna agechau) (1985) (Shusuke Kaneko)
The Half Moon (Itoshino Half Moon) (1987) (Yojiro Takita)

    +
So Soft, So Cunning (1978) (Toshiya Fujita) [this seems to have been a Roman Porno release, but Nikkatsu is nowadays treating it as mainstream movie]

Great thread. I have a list here consisting mainly of movies from the 70ies. Most seem to got produced around the time when the early Roman Porno boom started to fade out a bit (from about 1974 until about 1976). The first mainstream movie which got produced by Nikkatsu after the start of Roman Porno was the second part of the MEN AND WAR trilogy. I think due to the success of this one Nikkatsu started to produce mainstream movies from time to time. It also must have been quite a good tactic to keep some of the talented directors and other stuff from moving to rival companies.

Mid 70ies the Roman Porno boom started to fade out a bit and one can see that most of the mainstream movies seem to have been produced around that time. Nikkatsu definitely was searching for new directions (other tendencies at that time was the development of their infamous SM line, especially the Dan Oniroku films, the harsher often rape-themed films but also things like the Koichiro Uno line of comedies). I am not exactly sure but it seems that the production was tuned down a bit later. Maybe the mainstream movies weren't that successful anymore or the production costs were to high, I don't know. Another reason could have been that they made the normal Roman Porno films look like a cheap addition.

There definitely are more mainstream movies from this period but I don't have any complete list. I think you could also count a few of the Eros Daisaku which usually got released at holidays with longer running times often fewer sex scenes and popular actors and actresses from outside Nikkatsu.

I think many of the mainstream movies are available on DVD in Japan. That said I haven't seen that many. I watched about two or three which got directed by Toshiya Fujita and have a few other ones from him lying around here. Definitely something I want to get into deeper in future though.

The list of movies I have here (as stated above, definitely still incomplete, especially regarding everything from the 80ies):
    • Men And War Pt. 1 (Sensou to ningen dai ichi bu; 1970, Yamamoto Satsuo): First Part of the trilogy. Still got produced before the start of Roman Porno but I included it here for the sake of completeness.
    • Men And War Pt. 2 (Sensou to ningen dai ni bu; 1971, Yamamoto Satsuo)
    • Men And War Pt. 3 (Sensou to ningen dai san bu; 1973, Yamamoto Satsuo)
    • The Sun Falls And Rises Again (Hi wa shizumu hi wa noboru; 1973, Kurahara Koreyoshi)
    • Red Paper Lantern (Akachouchin; 1974, Fujita Toshiya): Kumiko Akiyoshi Trilogy Pt. 1
    • Younger Sisters (Imouto; 1974, Fujita Toshiya): Kumiko Akiyoshi Trilogy Pt. 2
    • Virgin Blues (Baajin buruuzu; 1974, Fujita Toshiya): Kumiko Akiyoshi Trilogy Pt. 3
    • Black Panther Bitch M (Kuroi mehyou emu; 1974, Kurahara Koretsugu): Features Reiko Ike
    • The Four Roughnecks (Abayo dachikou; 1974, Yukihiro Sawada)
    • Portrait of a Flame (Honoo no shouzou; 1974, Fujita Toshiya and Kato Akira)
    • Evening Primrose (Yoimachigusa; 1974, Kumashiro Tatsumi)
    • Cape Erimo (Erimomisaki; 1975, Kato Akira)
    • Ah! That Pep Squad (Aa!! Hana no ouendan; 1976, Sone Chusei)
    • Ah! That Pep Squad 2 (Aa!! Hana no ouendan 2; 1976, Sone Chusei)
    • Sachiko's Happiness (Sachiko no kou; 1976, Takeda Kazunari)
    • Ah! That Pep Squad 3 (Aa!! Hana no ouendan 3; 1977, Sone Chusei)
    • The Baseball-Fan's Song (Yakyuukyou no uta; 1977, Kato Akira)
    • Past Days Won't Return (Kaerazaru hibi; 1978, Fujita Toshiya)
    • Panic in High School (Koukou dai-panikku; 1978, Sogo Ishii and Yukihiro Sawada)
    • Eighteen Years of Age, to the Sea (Juuhassai, umi e; 1979, Fujita Toshiya)
    • So Soft, So Cunning (Motto shinayaka ni motto shitataka ni; 1979, Fujita Toshiya)
    • Double Bed (Daburu beddo; 1983, Fujita Toshiya)
    • I'm All Yours (Minna agechau; 1985, Kenko Shuusuke)
    • Revolver (Riborubaa; 1988, Fujita Toshiya): Not entirely sure about this one. Maybe got produced after Nikkatsu changed their line from Roman Porno to Ropponica

With the 100 year anniversary of Nikkatsu many of the above listed got released on DVD. Here is the site summing up all the releases (Japanese only): Nikkatsu 100 Year Anniversary Releases

Yep. In 1974 there were certainly quite a few maintream films released, and Nikkatsu even seemed to be competing Toei with the pinky violence / karate influenced Black Panther Bitch M. I watched that a few days ago and will post something about it here when I find time.

Part II was still during their mainstream era, released June 12, 1971. Part III was during Roman Porno era.

I don't think I will bother making that list, but you're more than welcome to do it, and I can add it to the first post if you do.

I've seen Virgin Blues, So Soft So Cunning, Panic in High School, Black Panther Bitch M, Super Gun Lady: Police Branch 82, and Sukeban Deka: Dirty Mary.

Maito Guy, I have a movie in mind but can't recall the title. I saw it long ago but it starred Yoshio Harada & Meiko Kaji in a motorcycle gang. I believe it was directed by Toshiya Fujita but don't quote me on it.

Isn't this a roman porno though? It is listed on all the sources I used to make 'the list' and isn't it included on the roman porno series at DMM?

And this one as well? It was released by Geneon and later released by Happinet as part of their roman porno line.

This is also listed as a roman porno in the books I have and they even acknowledge it is an R-15. Based on the trailer (unless I mix it with something else in mind, I checked it like a year or two ago... :P ) it has nothing to do with roman porno but maybe it was still released/marketed as such in 1987?

    Sukeban Deka: Dirty Mary:
I'm pretty sure this was a mainstream release
    - Nikkatsu's website is currently listing it on the mainstream side, not Roman Porno.
    - It came out 1974.04.20. I can't find any other Nikkatsu release listed for that day. A Roman Porno should've been a triple/double feature, right?
    - I saw years ago. I don't remember it all that well, but I don't recall it having much sex in it
    - The film was originally intended to star Miki Sugimoto, which also might suggests of mainstream production
    - Posters, video covers etc. seem to make no reference to Roman Porno
    - On the other hand, DMM is listing it as Roman Porno

    Double Bed
I think you may be right with this. I also originally thought this was a Roman Porno release but went with Maito Guy's list. Perhaps one of those "Eros Daisaku" Roman Pornos?
    - Nikkatsu's website is listing it as Roman Porno
    - Geneon also released it as Roman Porno
    - A double feature with 武蔵野心中, which does seem like an erotic film, although not like a typical Roman Porno release.

    The Half Moon
I think this was also a mainstream release, although I'm not 100% sure
    - Nikkatsu's website is currently listing it on the mainstream side, not Roman Porno.
    - Happinet released it on DVD with no reference to Roman Porno (they call it "youth drama")
    - The trailer certainly did not market it as Roman Porno
    - I also can't find any other marketing material that would make a Roman Porno reference
    - Seems to have been a double feature with 嵯峨野の宿, which does however seem more or less ero, though.

I think you mean SHINJUKU OUTLAW: STEP ON THE GAS (Shinjuku autoroo buttobase) which got released in 1970, therefore still before the change to Roman Porno. It features Watari Tetsuya alongside Harada Yoshio. Kaji Meiko has a relatively small but integral role in it, at least to the extent to which I remember this one, since I watched it quite some time ago. But remember liking it very much. It will still take me sometime but eventually I'll get to the Nikkatsu New Action films in the Nikkatsu Action thread here.

That said many of the early Roman Porno films by directors who debuted before the change feel much like the Nikkatsu New Action films, especially the ones directed by Fujita Toshiya.

Just back checked on DOUBLE BED and I now also think that this wasn't a mainstream release. It was one of the Eros Daisaku movies which still had a higher budget than normal Roman Porno flicks and usually also less sex and more of an orientation to a mainstream audience coming with them, but they still got promoted as Roman Porno films, so I think it would be more accurate to not count them to the mainstream movies.

I'll eventually create a list of the Eros Daisaku later in the Roman Porno thread.

Looking forward to what you thought about it. Don't have this one here to watch but am definitely interested due to Reiko Ike. So I'll may get it later.

I completely forgout about that movie. I saw it about 4 years ago when a local theatre was having a Yoshio Harada memorial screening. To be honest, I thought it was a bit underwhelming. Not bad, though.

Yes, this is the one. thank you. I tried finding the file again but it might have been on one of my HDs that died (**kicks self in ass for failing to back up**). I remember it because one of the characters was named Sasori (Watari or Harada?) and of course, Kaji went on to make that name famous later. Hope you can review it because I can't recall what it was about though? some marijuana smuggling ring & a large amount of stolen weed leads to whole bunch of double crossing and trouble among the biker gangs?
