Roman Porno Reboot (Sono, Nakata, Shiota, Yukisada, Shiraishi) (2016)

"[Hideo] Nakata's film will be a lesbian story, while [Sion] Sono's is to be themed 'art'. In addition, Isao Yukisada (Crying Out Love in the Center of the World,) Akihiko Shiota (Canary) and Kazuya Shiraishi (Devil's Path) will helm productions."

It's funny, I was thinking a few weeks ago who the directors might be, and I listed three names. Sono was my first guess (my other guesses were Daisuke Miura and Kota Yoshida).

I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with. I really hope they stick to the old school aesthetic of classic pink movies and shoot them on film, but I doubt they will.

How will we even be able to see this if we don't live in Japan since it will only be shown theatrically and on SKYPerfect?

I think film is out of question, unfortunately.

The same way as all other Japanese films? Catch on festivals or wait for DVD/BD?

Not holding my breath for that to materialize. Perhaps Zipangu fest in the UK or J Film Pow Pow in Toronto or Japan Cuts but I don't see it happening on the left coast.

Out of the directors featured, I'm most interested in Akihiko Shiota. I felt MIDNIGHT WHISPERS was mediocre but I've been impressed with everything since especially GIPS & HARMFUL INSECT. Shame that most of his films aren't available in any licensed English friendly editions outside of his debut & his anime.

I, for one, hope they adhere to the prevailing subject matter of the older films such as rape, criminality, and "sexual liberation". The best of the older Nikkatsu films pushed boundaries. These must, too.

If they mimic the more playful, silly, "comical" Nikkatsu flicks, I'm totally uninterested.

    But this is exciting news.

    Website is up:
    http://www.nikkatsu-romanporno.com/reboot/

    The titles are:
Aroused by Gymnopedies by Isao Yukisada
Wet Woman in the Wind by Akihiko Shiota
Dawn of Felines by Kazuya Shiraishi
    ANTI-PORNO by Sion Sono
    White Lily by Hideo Nakata

Shiota's Wet Woman in the Wind won some awards at Locarno last month; Sono's Anti-Porno will premiere in France next month. The first film will open in Japan in November.

In an ideal world, they'd also be in the violent pink mode and feature a strong sex/violence/rape/eroticism mix.

If they're just erotic, interest level with me is zero.

On the other hand, crime/sex mixes ala RETREAT THROUGH THE WET WASTELAND, would be sweet.
