Arrow releasing "about a dozen" Toei titles in 2017

I came across an interview with Marc Walkow and he says
I’m happy to say that Arrow has another deal with Toei in the works, for about a dozen additional titles from the ’60s and ’70s, most of them Blu-ray premieres and many of them never before released on video with English subtitles. I’ve already started doing interviews for that batch, all of which will be out in 2017.

I posted a link to a 2-hour interview with Marc Walkow in the Criterion thread, and in it he mentions that half the titles from the new Toei deal are never before released w/ English subtitles. (and, reading between the lines, I get the feeling that he too, was not happy with the Scorpion transfers.)

I would like a region 2 Sonny Chiba boxset...but maybe it will not be, since the most popular of his films are already translated and available on the western market...

A "Girl Boss" or a "Terrifying Girls High School" boxset would be also great...

Boryoku Gai (Violent Streets) is Toei, right? That's the movie I really, really want!

Thanks for the link, yes it certainly sounds like TOEI have been difficult to work with, he also mentions the vintage documentaries and NHK Special 'The Men Who Made Battles Without Honour and Humanity' that TOEI promised and refused to supply at the eleventh hour with no explanation for the 'Battles' set, by the way this was included on the Japanese set, hopefully someone subs and torrent this doc.

Definitely sounds like TOEI sent them subpar materials for the 'Scorpion' set.....which if there's no existing HD masters for the upcoming ARROW releases is another disaster waiting to happen!

mhh after all the controversy generated by the blu-tinged Scorpion BD I think they would not go on releasing more TOEI titles if they know they will receive subpar material... just my 2 cents.... and yes I want to watch that Japanese documentary on "Battles without honor and humanity" too. Speaking of which, at one point Walcow mention he had the chance to speak to Hiroki Matsukata but felt it wasn't worth it ... I think he was wrong... I would take a Matsukata interview over any set designer interview any day of the week LOL

I'm not sure you're completely correct on the Hiroki Matsukata interview, I thought he said it ended up being ridiculously expensive to interview the surviving, more well known cast members so instead he interviewed the other lesser known talent as their stories hadn't been documented, down to cost no doubt, damn shame! He also mentions Meiko Kaji's management were contacted for a possible interview but he was knocked back as she apparently doesn't like to discuss this part of her career, wasn't there an interview with her on the Australian 'Lady Snowblood' dvd? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

TOEI have been springing surprises with rarities turning up on some of the channels in Japan, 'Wolf Guy' was one, presumably this was a newly struck HD version, so if ARROW actually ask what's available from their wish list it could still be alright.....just please don't touch any of those low contrast prints with a bargepole! Believe me the tint was the least of the problems with that 'Sasori' set!

I was in Japan recently and not TOEI related but at the International Tokyo Film Festival they screened a newly restored 4K 'King Kong Vs Godzilla' [subbed too....and the Q&A afterwards translated through an earpiece, a nice touch!], 4K restorations of Fukasaku's 'Virus' and 'Legend of the Eight Samurai' along with Mizoguchi's 'Ugetsu Monogatari', so you may see these appear from some labels over the next year.

I don't know. It isn't a Toei title, but Arrow's DARK WATER Blu-ray uses an HD master created in 2002! So I don't have much faith in their Japanese titles.

Off topic, in that podcast, Marc Walkow mentioned that the budget he had for Criterion's HOUSE release (2010) was higher than the one they had for their LONE WOLF AND CUB box set (2016), and I can't think of a more telling statement about the current state of psychical media.

Yes, that's Toei. And yes, it's a fantastic movie.

That should be the one from the Japanese Toho dvd from 2003.

Yes. Quite a lot of what they screen on Toei channel is HD, as you can see. That doesn't mean they are necessarily pristine restorations, but I haven't seen any disasters either. I only have the SD subscription, though (at my girlfriend's place, to be precise. Probably a good thing, otherwise I'd spend all my time watching TV )

I've been to Tokyo several times during TIFF and FILMEX and never attended either. The stuff playing in 35mm in theaters like Laputa, Cinema Vera, Shin bungeiza, Jinbocho etc. is just so much more interesting IMO that I never managed to make time to see anything on those fests.
