    Black Mirror On Netflix (Merged)

How good is this show? For the last few years people have been telling me how good this show is and I've been obstinately not watching it. Which is odd considering the shit that I sometimes do watch... But if you haven't seen it what we've got ourselves here is a Netflix version of The Outer Limits where all the stories revolve round new tech and our relationship to it. But that's not really a great comparison for the show (even though I just made it myself) because this one is an awful lot more sophisticated and hits human notes I don't recall any other show hitting. Certainly not The Outer Limits (which I loved).

As with any anthology show the quality varies between episodes more than most programs but so far the highlights for me are:
The National Anthem: An episode eerily prescient of the relevations that Britain's then Prime minister David Cameron wasn't above fucking the odd pig. One of the British princesses is kidnapped. Her ransom is that she will not be released until the Prime Minister fucks a pig live on air for all the world to see. Fucking hilarious stuff. Until, all of a sudden, it isn't. Masterful switch in tone that absolutely packs a wallop.

Shut Up And Dance: A boy jerks off to some porn online. Hackers film him through his webcam and blackmail him to follow their orders or the footage will be posted to all his friends and contacts. This is really fraught stuff with a killer performance by the young fellow playing the boy who doesn't want his mum to see him yanking his plank. The requests from the blackmailers get progressively nastier until boom the filmmakers pull the rug from under us at the end.

And also loved Hated In The Nation and Be Right Back. Really the only one I haven't liked a great deal so far was San Junipero and even that was kind of clever. It was just a bit dull and a bit silly. The basic level quality here is otherwise outstanding.

I tried to watch it a couple of times. Saw a few of the episodes, but it just didn't do much for me. The pig episode was alright, as was the one where people's memories are available for playback and editing.

I have seen the season 1+2 plus the Christmas special all made for UK tv but have yet to catch up on the netflix show which is considered to be season 3 I guess. I'm waiting for a Blu or dvd release and it does not appear to be happening, can't understand how other Netflix shows get the dvd treatment and this one does not.

That makes sense. I thought this was made for British TV but when the Netflix logo kept coming up I figured I must have been remembering wrong.

I'm surprised to hear Netflix do DVD releases. That doesn't seem to gel with their business model. Season 4 is coming to Netflix in about 6 weeks I think.

I read somewhere that the creator of BM is not interested in releasing them onto any physical media format, Hopefully he changes his mind or someone licenses them from the producers. Although I may just get Netflix for one month and watch them that way if the wait is too long. House of Cards was a netflix show wasn't it, that got a dvd release.

Yeah it did too... I guess it probably sold a fair few copies, and it's a good thing generally, but I would have thought all the upside for Netflix would have been in keeping it exclusive for themselves. But their business model is baffling on the whole I suppose.

    Ranking S4:

    1. Metalhead
    2. Hang the DJ
    3. USS Callister
    ...
    4. Black Museum
    5. Crocodile
    ...
    6. Arkangel

Kind of surprised that Metalhead was (imo) this season's Best in Show; but then again, that Boston Dynamics shit has always been my ultimate nightmare fuel. Reminded me somewhat of Spielberg's Duel (ie, the tension of a chase unaided by expository backstory), it played like a truly classic Twilight Zone episode. Really not that much difference in ranks 1-5. Hang the DJ was terrific. I thought Arkangel was definitely the weakest of the bunch.
Possibly strongest season yet, but Booker does seem to be recycling a lot of ideas.

Also dug Hang the DJ and USS Callister, heard great things about Metalhead although the synopsis makes it sound the most generic.

I liked Black Museum the most. The guy was such a good story teller I was watching that one thinking thinking this could be a whole other series. Half hour episodes each week with body mods having horrific effects. Would be keen. Also really loved the USS Callister episode. There's some really desperate deux ex machimas pulled to get our guys out of that mess but when you're that much fun I'll overlook it.
