Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built

I have a weird fascination with the Winchester House (maybe it's not that weird, the Winchester House really is pretty fascinating!) but a love for Helen Mirren so this looks like something that I should probably see.

I'm hardly an expert on the real life events that inspired it but I'm familiar enough thanks to reading up on it and seeing a few documentaries to know that there's potential here for a seriously great movie. Whether this is it or not obviously remains to be seen.

"nspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…"

And it’s a Hammer film, sort of.

It certainly originated as one of the current Hammer's projects, but apparently they pushed it off on someone else due to money woes at the time. Too bad; I would at least hope that Hammer gets a credit somewhere, and that would be smart advertising to Hammer fans who might otherwise give it a miss.

Directed by The Spierig Brothers (Jigsaw, Predestination) and co-written by Tom Vaughan and The Spierig Brothers, Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren (Best Actress, The Queen, 2006) stars as the infamous and eccentric heiress Sarah Winchester, who stops at nothing to protect her family from the evil spirits haunting them. The hair-raising thriller also stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Mudbound, Chappaquiddick), Sarah Snook (Steve Jobs, Predestination), Angus Sampson (Mad Max: Fury Road, Insidious), and newcomer Finn Scicluna-O’Prey (TV’s “True Story with Hamish & Andy”).
