    The Gregory Dark Thread

Ever since Rialto released their interview with Dark a few months back I've went back through a good portion of his work, even some of his music videos, which has proven to be very rewarding. While his hardcore work is legendary with the likes of the New Wave Hookers films and The Devil in Miss Jones 3-5, I find his best stuff to be the series of erotic thrillers he did in the 90's. The Animal Instincts and Secret Games trilogies, both Mirror Images films, Object of Obsession and Body of Influence are all terrific. Animal Instincts 2 just might be his best. They all fulfill the various quotas the late night thrillers of the day required, but they also subvert the formula with (pun intended) very dark storylines and themes and naturally are stylish as all hell.

Then of course there's See No Evil, the slasher starring fucking Kane from the WWE. Incredibly fun movie, though I do think the direction gets a bit too heavy handed at times, he really let the music video influence come to the forefront which can get a bit distracting but overall its a solid slasher that might not reinvent the wheel but actually does some interesting things with its victimology that might take some people by surprise. And Kane chokeslams someone to death.

Anyone seen his action/sci-fi hybrids Dead Man Walking or Street Asylum?

I liked both but thought STREET ASYLUM was the better film. Both were financed by VCA so I wonder if Hustler now owns them? Anyway, both are worth watching. I also liked his most recent film FRENEMY (or LITTLE FISH, STRANGE POND). A sort of odd comedy that never really got much attention.

See No Evil was fun. Not particularly original and overdone at times, but like Tom says, Kane is pretty fun to watch in it and it has some good kills and a nice setting.

The sequel by the Soska Sisters though? It's fun, but basically a complete rehash of the first movie. Some decent kills but remarkably unoriginal.

Anyone here seen Snake Pit (1996)? Made after he formed his own Dark Works and jumped from VCA to Evil Angel, it's one of the Darkman's most avant and inaccessible. There's really no straight narrative per say, but it centers around a game of back ally craps played with plastic and rubber toy skeletons and bones and weird masks (Reagan, Al Gore (I think), Hubert Humphry, ect…). Each time "Hatman" as he's billed wins a round, he puts on a mask which starts a sex scene.

Perhaps the most interesting about it though, is before and after each sex scene are interviews or "interrogations" as Dark refers to them, which would be a constant in his late 90's hardcore, with the girls, waxing philosophic on what they define as evil, their fears, if they consider themselves sluts and so on. Pretty fascinating and at times alarming, especially when one of the girls says she doesn't fear Hell because she feels like she's already there. Roxanne Hall however is the most frank, who claims she wants to go to Hell because she believes it's her destiny to burn. Her scene is the most intense, and she even took a break from the business after this, though she worked with Dark later that same year in a Melvins video where she lied in a tub full of worms and even slurped the bathwater through a straw.

There's all sorts of odd flash edits throughout and the grotesque masks are even worn at times during the sex making things even more uncomfortable. The sets and locations are pretty typical porn sets unlike most of Dark's other movies. Not sure if that was a budget thing or if he was trying to subvert expectations by setting a scene in a "normal" location then pulling the rug out from an unsuspecting viewer when the freaky masks come into play or what but some of them look pretty grungy.

    This is pretty great stuff.

There should be some more reasonably priced ones on eBay or ADM.

His SHOCKING TRUTH series was very similar to SNAKE PIT. They're also worth watching.

And, I'm not sure where Ian buys his adult dvd's but CD Universe has it for just over $13..
