Blood Sucking Freak: the Life and Times of Joel M. Reed

    https://headpress.com/product/blood-sucking-freak/

The Headpress website re-launched today and I noticed this title. I tried to put in an order for either version and they were both out of stock. Blood Sucking Freaks AKA the Incredible Torture Show is one of the all time great exploitation/Grindhouse/whatever pictures. I loved it when I was 12 when I first saw it (I think it was either the 3rd or 4th DVD I ever bought) and I still enjoy it. It has a time capsule quality as well.

John has been working on this FOREVER, I've been following the progress on his FB page.

Can't wait to get my hands on this.

I hope it covers the NYC and underground film scene extensively. Reed isn't a great filmmaker and I've had the misfortune of watching his Night of the Zombies and the G.I. Executioner. Blood Sucking Freaks was the fluke in his career.

Bonus points if he covers the feud with Bill Landis.

What was the feud with Bill Landis?

I've only seen BSF one time & I barely remember it. I don't even recall if I liked it. I know it was one I rented in my teens. There is a blu release, right? Is it worth picking up?

This is all hearsay but I recall Bill Landis got involved with Reed over the making of porno's. This was during Bill's cocaine years. And the end result was Reed (allegedly) burning Bill over a ton of cash and Bill serving some time.

I don't know how much of that is true and Bill is not the most reliable of sources.

The Troma Blu has a good transfer but I've always preferred the grody look of the old DVD. It does reinstate a deleted scene where Sardu blows Ralphus.

This could be up there with the Ghastly One book. I once read an interview with Reed and he came across as pretty creepy in my opinion: an elderly man who certainly liked younger company. Not sure how young though.

That about Landis & Reed sounds very familiar. Maybe it was in one of the issues of the zine his wife did? I sold those & totally regret it! She should do reprints...

I remember an interview with Reed back around 2000 where he tried to fuck the actress who was in the split in half scene in Blood Sucking Freaks (and who also was in Shriek of the Mutilated) and she threw him against the wall. "She was very strong." Remarked Reed.

There's probably a reason why he wasn't involved in any of the extras of the two Troma DVD's even though he lives very close to Troma HQ.

If you haven't heard it yet, the Projection Booth episode on Bloodsucking Freaks is all kinds of great.

    Reed is interviewed on it.

    This too:

I can't find one of him attending a screening where he dishes more details like the Blonde who was killed by her husband thought she was dating a millionaire who turned out to be a homeless guy.
