Thread: Essential Shot On Video Horror Movies

There was an internet outage today that -of course- happened right after I did my errands and had jack shit to do. So I watched Wicked World and the opening was great but it had the same problem as Things where the movie just meanders for a good 20 minutes (it felt much longer this time) with characters just wandering around.

Worth watching but it didn't quite capture the same magic as Things.

It was shot on film and edited on video, but yeah it feels SOV. And you're right, it doesn't have the same energy as Things but it's got a lot of other stuff going on. It's crazy ambitious, Barry got in way over his head in a lot of ways, but I love that he just went for it. It is too long but at the same time I don't think I'd cut a second from it because it has that weird deeply personal feel to it. Maybe Barry is an auteur, haha.

The same way Neal Breen and Ed Wood are auteurs, sure. I always laugh when I remember reading a review of The Beyond and the reviewer trries to down play the movie as "dime store surrealism" no, THIS is actual dime store surrealism.
