Thread: Essential Shot On Video Horror Movies

Anyone seen Fatal Exposure (1989)? If a SOV flick could ever be called "stylish" its this one with actual effort put into the lighting and photography. Tons of great gore effects too.

Saw Fatal Exposure last night. It's the kind of flick that I would have gone ape shit over had I seen it when I was a kid. Really fun little sleazy slasher with some damn good gore effects. It easily has the best makeup effects of any SOV flick. And the acting is pretty decent as well. Only critique I can throw at it, other than being a dick and mocking it for being a B picture, is that all of the women in the movie appear to have too much rouge on their cheeks or it could be a weird effect of the camcorder they used.

I have always wanted to see this, but still haven't gotten around to it. I'll have to track a copy down.

Donald Farmer's Scream Dream is... something. Maybe something worth seeing depending on your tastes.

"One of the girls in a rock band is fired from the band. She is, in reality, a witch, and possesses the body of the girl who replaces her in order to take revenge on the rest of the band. "

I dug the Hell out of it but I am a glutton for punishment. Melissa Moore takes her top off. There's a repetitive synth track standing in for an actual score. The rock band is called Rikk0-O-Shay and they're amazing. But before the movie even really gets started there's an opening scene where a woman gets chainsaw'd through her legs and then a random montage of gore. None of this has anything to do with the actual plot of the movie.

It's near the bottom of the barrel as far as heavy metal horror goes, it's not even really metal, just hard rock, but get enough Miller High Life into you and watch it when you're drunk and really tired and it's fun in the best way that movies like this are fun. It also has some cool rubber monster effects, lots of horrible eighties fashions, plenty of dumb gore and bad acting - all the staples of SOV trash beauty are there.

    Here's the amazing opening scene.

    Rock! Shock! Pop!

It's been over 10 years since I've seen it, but I remember it stood out amongst all of the other SOV stuff being released at the time. I think it was only ever released on VHS.
That's the one that has a scene where a chick has her tits ripped off by zombies. That's the only scene that stood out as I found most of the movie to be pretty meh in general.

I finally decided to watch Boardinghouse (1982) and it's actually pretty decent. Easily the most competently made SOV horror film. The blown up to 35MM version actually looks pretty good considering.

Enjoyable B flick with some great imagery. Good gore. But I don't like the director's cut too much as I found it very overlong. The 35MM print is the best version in my opinion. I dare say it's an underappreciated B horror effort.

I love BOARDINGHOUSE. It's like a porno with all of the sex scenes edited out.

Is the director's cut the 2hr. version? I've always been curious about it, but I think the 98 min. version is perfect.

There's something strangely hypnotic about Boardinghouse. It feels like it takes place in some parallel world that resembles our own circa 1982 but everything is slightly alien. The same could be said for a number of SOV flicks though. Its what makes them special. I still wager The Burning Moon is the best of the bunch.
