According to Hellman, both of those films are coming this year. As for the Japanese films, Criterion has the rights to over 200 Shochiku films, so you'll be seeing a lot of them.

I've seen a lot of great Japanese films and some not-so-great (I'm a big fan of Zero Woman), and I'm burned out on them for now. I do wish Criterion would look toward other countries, including the USA its own country. After several years of delay I would be just as happy if any company released the Hellman westerns. One of the most important westerns, no less great if not more so than the Hellmans, is The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982) which is obtainable. Criterion is just not interested in the genre.

They did a spectacularly good job on Heaven's Gate (1980) last year. So good I want to see them release more westerns. There are so many great westerns available, especially from the early years of cinema right up through the 1950s.

Hadn't heard of this one, love Westerns from the 70s and it's directed by Robert Young with Edward James Almos starring! Will have to check it out. Thanks Richard.

Someone on Criterion's facebook page said that Mulvaney emailed him the following re: the Tati films

"Regarding Tati, we have recently renewed the rights and they will be going back in print with a new restoration sometime in the future. I hope this helps!"

Just stumbled across this: http://fakecriterions.tumblr.com/ Maybe old news to some, but still.

    A topical one:

I bet Richard W will be excited -- more westerns from Criterion.

    Nothing there for me though...
