My sister's puppy died tonight. Now Ric Ocasek. I think I'm going to bed, this day sucks.

It wasn't just that he was a hometown hero, but, the Cars were just a great band that bridged Rock and what was often called "New Wave". They just made smart, driving music. And, their leader was RIC OCASEK.
I loved how he used wit and his wiry, but, effective voice to form the tunes (the other co-lead vocalist was the long-departed Ben Orr). The band used tech to create their sound (tip of the hat to Greg Hawkes), and were in the forefront of producing creative "MTV ready" videos. Personally, I felt that they never really got their due, dismissed far too often as a lite pop band.

    RIP.

It was amazing that Ocasek's unique vocals were interchangeable with Orr's. They had two of the greatest voices in rock, ever. Genres be damned.

It's being reported that he was actually only 70.

That makes more sense. We were talking about it last night and 75 seemed older than I would have thought.

I was really bummed out when I heard this. At their best, namely those first few albums, The Cars were fucking great. Really unique sound and those one-of-a-kind vocals. They don't sound dated at all either, at least to my ears. And as Ian mentioned, he was a very respected producer too. RIP
