    It's always been said that this was Bowie's version of Ziggy Stardust targeted at the American market. I've just been listening to it (hence the question) but I can never work out what it is about the songs that makes this the case? anyone...

    I think it's mostly because the songs were written in America while he was on the Ziggy tour. Off the top of my head, the obvious ones would be Panic In Detroit, because of the title and because of that early R&B rhythm that was a staple of Black music, and The Jean Genie, because it was about Iggy Pop, supposedly.
