The shitty 'gator FX really sink it; at certain points, I think they literally floated one of those little rubber alligators in a bathtub and filmed it. It's second-rate Martino all the way.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

It's pretty bad even by Italian horror standards. Almost no gore too.

I'd have to agree, I found it a tough slog even aside from the poor f/x.

Now that I think about it, I know Jaws (PG-rated JAWS) has more gore than Great Alligator. Very sad.

Oh no, please don't let me be the only one here who really likes 'Great Alligator'.

I think it's best appreciated perhaps as one of the long cycle of movies Martino made where he just throws a load of random genre elements at the screen and see what sticks; lots of wacky, unpredictable fun, and the ending just goes absolutely bananas.

As with so many of the Italian Jaws rip-offs/monster movies, the fact that the effects are terrible and nothing really happens for long periods of time is just part of the fun - it makes it a perfect movie to throw on on a swletering summer afternoon when it's too hot to move and just gently roll along with... or that's what's I thunk, at least. If you're looking for tension or shock-horror croc attack stuff though, it is, admittedly, probably not the one to go for.

I think it just sticks out as a weak film in Martino's filmography because so many of his films are above-average. I'd really have to watch it again for a fair assessment; I watched it once when the NoShame DVD came out, so that has to be almost 15 years ago.

So will Bill/DeFalco ever release The Farmer?
