Press release for the upcoming DVD release of CLIP:

Artsploitation Films Launching Kino Lorber Partnership With Director Maja Miloš Explicit Drama - CLIP

Available June 11 on DVD, Digital and VOD

“...one of the most unflinching and controversial portraits of teenage lust, longing, anguish, and rebellion ever captured on camera. I haven’t been able to forget it since.”
James Kaelan, MovieMaker Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

LOS ANGELES (April 29, 2013) – Artsploitation Films, the rising American film label that continues to deliver edgy international movies to North American audiences announces the company will begin distributing its acclaimed films in the U.S. though Kino Lorber beginning with Maja Miloš’ award winning CLIP on June 11, 2013.

CLIP is a dynamic, disturbing portrait of contemporary Serbian youth. Jasna, played fearlessly by Isidora Simijonovic, is a pretty girl in her mid-teens. With a terminally ill father and dispirited mother at home, she is disillusioned by her unglamorous life in a dismal Belgrade suburb. Opposing everyone, including herself, she experiments with sex, drugs and partying. A close collaboration between Miloš and her precocious ingénue, Isadora Simijonovic, CLIP is a raw, unflinching look at the perilous world of a rootless teenager in the line of Larry Clark’s KIDS, a film centered on the daily lives of a group of sexually active teenagers in the mid-90s New York City.

Writer/Director Maja Miloš makes her directorial debut in this searing portrait of modern Serbia. This stunning first film won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s International Film Festival of Rotterdam. It won Best Director honors for Miloš at the Transylvania International Film Festival. It won the White Iris Award at the Brussels European Film Festival and the Kingfisher Award at the Ljubljana International Film Festival. It also played the Toronto International Film Festival, Montreal’s Festival du Noveau Cinema, The Chicago International Film Festival and AFI Fest in Los Angeles respectively.

    ABOUT ARTSPLOITATION HEAD RAYMOND MURRAY:

Murray is the co-founder of TLA Entertainment Group and its president/CEO since its inception in 1981. Over the years, the company has operated art house cinemas and later, award-winning video stores in New York City and Philadelphia. Today, the company runs www.tlavideo.com, one of the country’s largest online DVD/VOD sales sites. Murray also founded and continues to be the Artistic Director of Philadelphia QFest and was Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Film Festival (2001-10). In 2000, Murray and partners launched TLA Releasing, a film distribution company that released films in North America. The company expanded its focus with the launch of the genre-focused Danger After Dark label in 2003. In 2004 it opened an office in London and expanded operations in the UK. Prominent releases include Suicide Club, Latter Days, Death of a Dynasty, Another Gay Movie, The Trip, Adam and Steve and Sleeper Cell.

    CLIP – SYNOPSIS:

In CLIP, Jasna, a teenage Serbian girl, grapples with random sexual encounters and an uncertain future. With her father plagued by illness, Jasna is left with nothing to help her navigate her world other than her camera phone and a strong desire to capture clips of her life speeding by. With her young and courageous cast, Miloš crafts an uncensored, sexually frank and ferociously honest portrait of modern youth. As Jasna rushes to leave her adolescence behind, she takes on a life of aimless wandering that appears lonely and precarious, but somehow she maintains control of this wild ride.

    Press release for Vanishing Waves:

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED & AWARD WINNING VANISHING WAVES COMING TO DVD (2-DISC SET), VOD & DIGITAL JULY 23 FROM ARTSPLOITATION FILMS

Los Angeles, CA (July 1, 2013) – Artsploitation Films, the rising American film company, continues to deliver edgy international movies to North American audiences with its latest release, VANISHING WAVES. Artsploitation’s release of VANISHING WAVES will arrive on DVD (2-Disc Set), VOD and Digital Download for the first time ever on July 23. The impressive list of DVD bonus features include: the original trailer and soundtrack, a Cineuropa interview with director Kristina Bouzyte, a 12-page fully illustrated booklet on the genesis of the film, a making of VANISHING WAVES featurette and Bouzyte’s first feature film, The Collectress. Twitch called VANISHING WAVES, "an exquisite Sci-fi head trip.” The Wall Street Journal summed it up in two words: “Trippy and Erotic” Slant praised the film as ““A scintillating sci-fi throwback” while Time Out New York hailed it as “’70s-inflected, sexually explicit sci-fi opus” and went on to say “a deserved midnight-movie cult following is all but assured” and The Village Voice called the film “A sleek sci-fi reverie.”

VANISHING WAVES swept all the major awards – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress (Jurga Jutaite) – at 2012’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. It also won Best Film at the Rio Grind Film Festival in Vancouver where it was described by the festival director Rachel Fox as “the most acclaimed film – by a female filmmaker, or anyone period, of 2012.” VANISHING WAVES also played at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Palic European Film Festival, Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival and Sitges Film Festival.

VANISHING WAVES is a bold, visionary work of science fiction cinema that recalls the genre in its cerebral 1960s and ’70s golden age, just as it simultaneously forges new territory with its unique fusion of emotional melodrama and hallucinatory widescreen spectacle, VANISHING WAVES is one of the most accomplished and distinctive European films in recent memory. The second solo feature from Lithuanian director Kristina Buozyte, following her acclaimed 2008 debut The Collectress, the 2012 production VANISHING WAVES confirms Buozyte as a major young talent whose frequently breathtaking visual and technical gifts are thankfully also matched by her interest in complex characterizations, adventurous narratives, and challenging themes.

Her new film is a science fiction romance that is equally occupied by the erotic as well as the fantastic. Lukas (Marius Jampolskis) is assisting a scientific research team by functioning as a patient in a series of heavily monitored (and medicated) sensory deprivation experiments wherein he is attempting to make some form of contact with the subject, Aurora (Jurga Jutaite), a young woman who has been locked in a comatose state for some time. Doctors initially hope for just a vague reaffirmation of consciousness, but the experiment takes an unexpected twist when Lukas and Aurora actually develop a strong psychic link in their mutually altered forms of consciousness…and their link quickly evolves into a romantic, sexually charged relationship. As Lukas hides this data from his researchers, he and Aurora meet secretly and passionately in a series of surreal dreamscapes created by their collective minds, but their union is tragically doomed to collapse around them. Exploring the tantalizing possibilities of forming a true, all-encompassing bond with one’s lover, VANISHING WAVES is hypnotic, erotic, wholly engrossing, and wildly thought-provoking cinema that transcends any perceived limitations of the science fiction genre, becoming one of the year’s most provocative films in the process.

Artsploitation’s next release, Germany’s COMBAT GIRLS, arrives on DVD, VOD and Digital Download on Tuesday, July 9. This searing coming of age drama that follows two suburban girls from vastly different backgrounds who become ensnared in the Neo-Nazi youth movement features an award-winning performance from lead actress Alina Levshin.

I remember I was hyped to see this due to all the buzz about it last year. But meh, it was nothing special & I'm definitely not going to shell out any dough to get it on DVD. The acting reminded me of a bad telenovela but no one watches an exploitation flick for the acting right? The problem for me was that even the horror elements were sub par IMHO. The onscreen brutality (chainsaw murders, cannibalism, bloody gunfights) never really unnerved me or made me uneasy in any way -- it played like a typical B-grade horror movie. I also kept getting Bruce Dern flashbacks every time that Uncle Costello drug lord character appeared onscreen...which wasn't a good thing either. I read that Michael Biehn & his production company is involved in the obligatory remake but I have zero interest after seeing the lackluster original.

There is currently a beautiful blu ray version of "Combat Girls"( AKA "Kriegerin") available on Amazon Germany( No English subtitles, but it blows the dvd away)-

There is also going to be an upcoming blu ray version of "Vanishing Waves" available on Amazon Germany in September( No English subtitles, but this movie deserves the higher resolution video to fully appreciate it)-

They've just picked up a Spanish movie called Animals.

"This very unconventional coming-of-age tale is an intoxicating blend of fantasy and cold reality as it follows shy teenager’s perilous period when exciting but troubling sexuality enters into his formerly innocent world. Seventeen-year-old high-schooler Pol has stubbornly extended his childhood, aided in no small measure by his opinionated, drums-playing, English-speaking pet teddy bear Deerhoof. But when he meets alluring new student Icari, the safety of Pol’s innocent imagination crumbles he experiences his first pangs of love and sexual longing. But what will happen to Deerhoof in this new world and can Pol accept his new-found feelings? Co-starring Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, “Sherlock”) as his perceptive teacher, this fresh, inventive take on first love that is funny, often bizarre and tragically intense. "

    Release date is 10/22/13.
