It would be nice to know if Stormovie have issued a second pressing of the picture - possibly unlikely, but you never know...
Skimmed through it last night and it looked okay but haven't had time yet to sit down and watch it from start to finish.

Each version of the movie is on its own disc and there are minimal extras so I'm hoping there aren't any macroblocking problems.

I'm revisiting CALIGULA 2 on my lunch break, having rebought the Stormovie DVD. It looks better than I remember, but still I don't think there's much in it between this release and the earlier X-Rated disc - so those with the German disc shouldn't really be too tempted to 'upgrade'. The lack of English subs for the portions of the film never dubbed into English is irritating, as they're present on the X-Rated disc, but it's hardly dialogue vital to the plot - just additional exchanges here and there.

The film, though, is much more fun than I remember it being, but leaves a nasty aftertaste as it's just soooo filthy. The portentous English dialogue, delivered equally portentiously by Brandon, cracks me up: 'Reality is just another dream'; 'I thought Rome had more than enough Gods as it is'. It's almost like CARRY ON CALIGULA.

And another corker of a line: 'My wine is better guarded than your wives' private parts'.

I have this vivid image of you lounging on a chaise while one wench feeds you grapes and two others wave palm fronds over your head.

Magnum Video (not the same company that put out VHS titles in clamshell cases) was responsible for a few of these, including CALIGULA REINCARNATED AS HITLER, CALIGULA REINCARNATED AS NERO (aka NERO AND POPPEA - AN ORGY OF POWER), and THE HERITAGE OF CALIGULA (aka BLOODSUCKING FREAKS). There was also CALIGULA: FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS (aka CARRY ON CLEO), but I think that was put out by another company.

CALIGULA is one of my favourite films so I like to dip into the Caligula-sploitation (as someone nicely put it earlier in the thread) genre from time to time.

CALIGULA...THE UNTOLD STORY is by far the best of the low rent bunch that followed in its wake. Not as good as its model, but at least it tries to out-do the original in terms of outrageousness with the hardcore and spears up the arse. All in all a good film. The 2 porno's he made with the same cast/sets are worth a look: MESSALINA'S IMPERIAL ORGASM and THE VIRGIN OF IMPERIAL ROME. The latter includes the orgy from CALIGULA 2. I had these on DVD-r but seem to have lost them which is really annoying so if anyone can help steer me in the right direction or provide a replacement DVD-r I would like to get them back.

MESSALINA, MESSALINA was made using the same sets of CALIGULA and stars the incredible Anneka Di Lorenzo. It's a kind of lame sex comedy - Italian humour isn't very funny - but thanks to Lorenzo its sexy enough and has a great splatter climax. Avoid the German release doubled with the Femi Benussi POPPEA flick (with same score as MESSALINA). It's German language only and cut down to just over an hour. Almost all that orgy massacre is missing.

THE HOT NIGHTS OF CALIGULA aka CALIGULA EROTICA is another sex comedy that isn't very funny. But it has Patricia Webley (of MALABIMBA and PLAY MOTEL etc) so it's fairly sexy. The Italian limited edition is a nice release with English audio option but it removes all the hardcore inserts from this release. Some will be pleased by this but I thought they at least made the film more interesting. Again, I'm after a DVD-r of the hardcore version to include with this release, as mine was part of a whole bunch of DVD-r and stuff that have vanished (think I must have binned a load of stuff by mistake some years back).

CALIGULA AND MESSALINA and NERO AND POPPEA (AN ORGY OF POWER) are two with the name Bruno Mattei attached to them...so expect goofball cheese-a-thons that are kind of entertaining if in the right mood. They are far too silly to be offensive or disturbing and the sex isn't that strong. But C&M is one of those films that borrows the copulating horses from THE BEAST and throws in some of its own mating donkeys for good measure. Various dvds are knocking about of various length. I have the German laser paradise BLUE EDITION which is over 100m but apparently this too is much shorter than the original running time. NERO I don't think is on DVD but correct me if I'm wrong.

CALIGULA'S SLAVES has a Greek DVD release. I haven't seen that disc but the film is an artsy fartsy soft core cheese fest. Considering the movie it's ripping off was notorious for its excesses you would think these flicks would at least try to do something similar....which is why I like/appreciate the D'Amato film, but in cases like this it's just all very tame, lame and meh...boring. But I'd buy it if a decent enough release shows up just because I'm a Caligula junkie fool.
