DYNASTY 3-D and REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN 3-D

Two of the best martial arts films I've ever seen are SUPER DRAGON aka DYNASTY (1977) and REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN aka 13 NUNS (1982). The production values and craftsmanship are very high. Superbly choreographed, directed (by Mei Chun Chang), photographed and elaborately produced from better-than-average scripts. The 3-D is some of the best I've ever seen from the twin-lens / single-camera process. The filmmakers worked hard to get the stereoscopic lensing right, and every frame shows the care they put into it. Also, there is rampant female nudity all over the place. I'm going by field sequential 3-D DVD-R's (probably sourced from Asian VHS released in the 1990s) which are not the best quality, but good enough to judge the virtues of these two terrific films.

Has anyone seen them? flat or in 3-D?
What do you make of these two films?
Have they been released on DVD somewhere, does anyone know?

Do you mean more martial arts films in 3-D, more martial arts films with rampant female nudity or more martial arts films that are nicely shot with good production values? Or all of the above?

I don't know of any legit DVD releases of either movie but I think I have a DVD-R of Revenge Of The Shogun Women somewhere.

21st Century imported and released a lot of cool stuff. You see their logo pop up on a lot of 70s Chiba movies too.

I mean well-made films all around with solid stories and terrific fights, especially from the 1970s. R-rated for female nudity helps but isn't mandatory.

I saw a few Sonny Chiba films but I don't remember which and what. I really liked the Lone Wolf and Cub films up to a point.

Maybe Mike T knows if DYNASTY and REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN have had legit releases perhaps in Asia?

Mike T. doesn't post here anymore but you could email him if you like. Google doesn't turn anything up in regards to a legit DVD release, though there are plenty of bootlegs that are probably from the same source as yours floating around.

Check out the first Street Fighter film in regards to Chiba. The best way to see it is by way of the UK DVD from Optimum as it has the original Japanese language audio track with Eng. subs - the movie plays much better that way. It definitely earns its R-rating and is quite well made.

There's a fun write up of Shogun here with a link to an equally fun write up of Dynasty.

Something Weird has the trailer for Dynasty included on this trailer compilation but I don't think they've ever released the movie.

Thanks for the link. Nice write-ups except that I find REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN more worthwhile than he does. Perhaps he saw a really bad transfer of it. Incidentally those anaglyph trailers are no way to judge either film. They were shot in authentic polarized 3-D and projected for polarized glasses in theaters. They contain the best 3-D lensing I've ever seen in an action film. But the conversion into anaglyph -- for red and blue glasses -- turns the films into mud. Anyhow I'm going to read through the blog.

I vaguely remember STREET FIGHTER. I'll get that. So what else is choice from the 1970s-early 1980s? There can't be many like DYNASTY and REVENGE OF THE SHOGUN WOMEN that combined first-rate martial arts with Roman porn. But then I consider the recent Nikkatsu releases from the same period to be well-made, too.

The Nikkatsu Roman Porno stuff doesn't really go into martial arts territory. You should check out some of the Pinky Violence stuff, maybe? Not pure martial arts per se but a great mix of action and exploitative elements done in a way that only the Japanese can. You might also enjoy Koji Wakamatu's Notorious Concubines and you'd probably enjoy Chiba in The Executioner - that's got some solid fights, decent camerawork and some ladies. The proper Japanese version was released by Adness and though out of print shouldnt' be too hard to find.

Trying to think of some Chinese films to fit the bill... Sex & Zen maybe? It's really well made, really nicely shot, has some beautiful women in it. Not really a martial arts movie in the traditional sense, more of a Chinese fantasy film. If you want goofier and more action centric stuff, maybe Robotrix? More of a Robocop rip off though... Hm.

I'm sure there's some Shaw Brothers stuff that would definitely fit the bill - Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan, The Sexy Killer, Bamboo House Of Dolls, but again, they're low on kung fu action.

I'll flip through my discs when I get home to see if anything pops out at me. I'm drawing blanks at work today.

For a fun montage of martial arts movie clips, check this out, it's a fun glimpse at some stuff that's equal parts enjoyably bizarre and genuinely great.

CHINESE TORTURE CHAMBER STORY is a good one along the lines of Sex and Zen. The wire-work martial arts fight/sex scene is something of a classic.

Good call, Apronikoff. Discotheque put that out domestically if I remember correctly.

Eternal Evil Of Asia is another one - it's completely off the wall but is packed with decent fight scenes including that infamous sex battle.

What are the best martial arts films in general from the 1970s? Obvious question, but it must be asked. I guess I'm hung up on the seventies.

I wasn't suggesting that Nikkatsu RP ventured into martial arts merely commenting that their films - or at least the half-dozen or so that I've seen -- are creatively and technically legit, not bad films by any means. A nikkatsy production always looks good and is well made.
