It is, but it's not surprising to see one company trying to cash in on the success of another.

    Press release!

    "From the Press Release:
Image Entertainment, an RLJ Entertainment (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand, acquires the horror thriller WOLF CREEK 2 at the 2013 American Film Market. Original helmer and writer Greg Mclean returns to the sequel along with John Jarratt, who plays the film’s original antagonist. Shannon Ashlyn, Ryan Corr, and Phillipe Klaus also co-star. The announcement was made today by Image Entertainment’s Chief Acquisition Officer, Bill Bromiley.

WOLF CREEK 2 is scheduled for a 2014 release.

“We are thrilled to work with Greg Mclean on the follow-up to his superbly made first feature film,” says Bromiley. “Mick Taylor is one of the most sadistic characters I have seen on screen, and the sequel does not disappoint – it gets under the skin; we can’t wait to show horror fans!”

The sequel to the smash box office hit, WOLF CREEK 2 reunites viewers with the Australian Outback and the film’s murderous bushman. The Outback once more becomes a place of horror as another unwitting tourist becomes the prey for crazed, serial-killing pig-shooter Mick Taylor (John Jarratt).

WOLF CREEK 2 is co-written by Greg Mclean and Aaron Sterns and produced by Helen Leake, Steve Topic, and Mclean.

The deal was negotiated by Mark Ward, Jess De Leo, and Bromiley on behalf of RLJ Entertainment, by Ben Weiss at Paradigm, and by Peter Nelson and Joel VanderKloot at Nelson Davis Wetzstein LLP on behalf of the filmmakers.

We should have more details on the release soon so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, Wolf Creek 2 is being distributed in Australia by Roadshow Films and will hit Australian theatres on February 20, 2014.

    Synopsis
Lured by the promise of an Australian holiday, backpackers Rutger, Katarina, and Paul visit the notorious Wolf Creek Crater. Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes an horrific reality when they encounter the site’s most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the region ever wants to meet: Mick Taylor (John Jarratt).

As the backpackers flee, Mick pursues them on an epic white-knuckled rampage across hostile wasteland. Only one will remain to be dragged back to his lair to witness the true magnitude of his monstrosity. And if the last man standing is to have any hope of surviving where no one else has survived before, he’ll have to use every ounce of cunning to outwit the man behind the monster and become every bit as ruthless as the monster inside the man. Not sure if this will be the case outside of Australia or not but Wolf Creek 2 is supposedly going to be cut for a 15 rating in theaters and released 18+ on DVD/Blu.

And Dom... so what you're saying is that the secret to box office success in Australia is nasty gore? That doesn't sound so different from the US!
I dunno, I could watch Black Christmas whenever for the most part. I guess that's because it doesn't take as long for the carnage to begin.

I find it admirable to take your time and build your characters and suspense, but you have to think about re-watch-ability.

Bloody Disgusting has a clip online here, says the movie is incredible.

That's probably hyperbole but I still wanna see it.
