    Gritty Realistic 70s Action/Dramas...

I've been craving this genre lately. Stuff like Short Eyes, The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 and Death Wish. Stuff like that. What are your favorites?

Yeah both those. Some of these are from the 80's but I think still have that vibe:

    Fear City
    China Girl
    Ms. 45
    The Seven-Ups
    Nighthawks
    The Killing Hour
    52 Pick Up
    Cop (with James Woods)
    Shakedown
    Sharky's Machine
    Street Smart
    Stripped to Kill
    Thief
    Vice Squad
    Vigilante
    Walking the Edge
    Who'll Stop the Rain
    Cutter's Way
    Year of the Dragon
    Exterminator
    Across 110th Street
    After Hours
    Angel
    Avenging Angel
    The Art of Dying
    Central Park Drifter
    Wolfen
    Cruising
    J.D.'s Revenge
    Night Moves

    Good list.

Everybody needs to watch NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER.

I like SAVE THE TIGER with Jack Lemmon. It ain't a comedy. It's about setting your factory on fire to collect the insurance. There is no action in it, but there's plenty of mendacity. Plus two of the actors from Dark Shadows including Angelique in a rare movie appearance.

BORN TO WIN (1971) remains vastly under-rated. Avoid the cheap public domain editions. The U.K. edition is widescreen, anamorphic and uncut but the PAL speed-up is really high-pitched.

COPS AND ROBBERS (1973) and LAW AND DISORDER (1974) were two of my favorite films when they came out but I haven't seen them since. Gritty, yes. The latter is hard to find at a sane price and the longer I watch for a deal the less likely it gets.

I've been meaning to see REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER again.

I'd add Assault on Precinct 13.

Don't forget JOE with Peter Boyle. You'll recognize the neighborhood.

Movies don't come any grittier than LENNY (1974). Dustin Hoffman plays the 1960s standup comic and addict and Valerie Perrine his stripper wife. The lighting scheme was lifted from Daniel Kramer's photography in his photo-album book BOB DYLAN (1967).

    Gritty Realistic 70s Action/Dramas...

THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN. Matthau, Bruce Dern and a classic opening that foreshadows SHARKEY'S MACHINE. Out now on a nice looking and inexpensive German Blu.

    And it ain't no comedy.

Going further into the 90's ...

    Night of the Running Man
    Extreme Justice

Would make a good Scott Glenn/Mark Lester double feature.
