    RIP Ray Manzarek

Wow, this makes me seriously sad.

"Ray Manzarek -- who co-founded "The Doors" with Jim Morrison in 1965 and played keyboard -- has died, this according to the band's official Facebook page.

    Manzarek was 74.

According to the website, Manzarek passed away today at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer.

At the time of his death, Ray was surrounded by his wife Dorothy and his brothers Rick and James."

I was obsessed with The Doors for a while as a teenager. I'm still a fan... just not as obsessive. RIP Ray.

    RIP Ray Manzarek

A great musician. While Morrison got most of the attention Ray was the real heart of the band.

    RIP.

He always seemed like a genuinely nice guy too. Unlike Morrison.

I'm not a huge Doors fan, but I will always appreciate Manzareck for what he did for the band X.

    This sucks.

    RIP, Mr. Manzarek.

Man, another piece of a legendary band, gone.

And yeah, for the record, I agree with Horace when he says Manzarek was the heart of the band. While everyone crowed over Morrison, Manzarek was the centre, and the compass for the band.

He also gained my respect for not talking smack about Morrison, even when Morrison deserved to have the curtain pulled back on all his nonsense.

    His brother is Rick James?

I appreciate him more for his work with producing X's first album than for the Doors.
It's not going to suck itself...

I'll give him a props for the work he did with X, but over all he seemed to me to be a A+ prick.
I've heard more than a few interviews with the guy where he talks like he is a god among men. Of course I am having trouble finding most of them now, since Google seems to only want to show me memorial results. However, the one I remember most is archived at WFMU (in RealAudio.. wtf!). He was booked to call into Jonesville Station at the top of the show, then no showed. When the host finally tracked him down (about 40 minutes later), he treated the host like he was a peasant in king ray's kingdom, so the host hung up on him after less 5 minutes!

Always seemed like a decent guy in the interviews I heard, but that aside, I agree with the comments re: not talking shit about Morrison. The Doors sound is predominantly Manzarek. RIP.
