ESCAPE PLAN - Stallone & Schwarzenegger

I didn't see a thread for this yet. Apologies if there is one already.

I could care less if these guys were doing community theatre. I would still pay to see that as well! Call me an 80's action movie mark, but these guys still bring it in every project they're in. Yeah, they're older, but they're still entertaining! At least they know what to give the audience, Stallone especially. This is not a bad thing!

That being said, this got lukewarm reviews when it was screened recently. But who cares? It's Arnie and Sly in another film together!

I used to think Arnold was waaaay better. Now I guess I like them about even. Working up a list of my favorite movies from both of them, just the favorites, ones I watch over and over, Arnold still edges Sly out. I haven't seen most of their movies post mid-90's. Are there any gems I'm missing from either one? Talking about stuff like COLLATORAL DAMAGE, SIXTH DAY, THE SPECIALIST, AVENGING ANGELO, etc.?

    Sly movies I absolutely love:

    Nighthawks
    First Blood
    Cobra
    Rambo III
    Tango & Cash
    Rambo (JOHN RAMBO)

    Arnold movies I love:

    Conan the Barbarian
    Conan the Destroyer
    The Terminator
    Commando
    Raw Deal
    The Running Man
    Red Heat
    Total Recall

There's more than a few movies from both of them that I really like but don't love, PREDATOR, CLIFF HANGER, THE ROCKY's, etc.

My favorite movie on either list is probably CONAN THE BARBARIAN. Shit is magic. Best fantasy movie ever. FIRST BLOOD gives it a run for it's money for finest movie on either list, but I still think CONAN is finer and classier. TERMINATOR is one of my favorite sci-fi movies, I'd rank it just below BLADE RUNNER. ALIEN and ROAD WARRIOR would be third and fourth. Sly hasn't fared as well in fantasy and sci-fi. DEMOLITION MAN is ok. But compared to stuff like TOTAL RECALL and RUNNING MAN it looks cheap (and RUNNING MAN looks cheap!). Van Damme has had better success doing sci-fi than Sly has.

RAW DEAL and COBRA are practically the same movie. PREDATOR is like FIRST BLOOD PART II but with a monster thrown in, and it's much better for it.

Arnold hasn't produced anything as down to earth and as gritty as NIGHTHAWKS. Maybe TERMINATOR, but that's different. For plain fun it's hard to top COMMANDO and TOTAL RECALL. TANGO & CASH comes closest.

They both do comedy well and awful at the same time. Like their straight comedies suck, KINDERGARTEN COP, STOP OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT. But when they send up their action persona and mix it with fun action in movies like RED HEAT and TANGO AND CASH the results are phenomenal!

Lately, Arnold feels like he's run out of gas. Too bad. I still haven't seen ROCKY BALBOA but RAMBO gave Sly an extra lease on his creative life, in my eyes. The EXPENDABLE movies are just ok. Lot's of squandered potential but props for trying.

I think some people only see Arnold as a joke. The young guy I used to work with only knew him as a pop culture punchline and see's him more as the Simpson's character Rainier Wolfcastle. I tried to tell him otherwise but his mind was made up. His loss. Arnold might be a sad joke now (like Eddie Murphy) but his legacy and early movies tell otherwise. Oh well, their loss.

Arnold looks good with an old man beard.

Looks like a big budget futuristic version of Lock Up. I liked that flick by the way.

I liked Collateral Damage. The 6th Day is kinda meh. Have you seen End of Days? My favorite later Arnold movie. Not typical Arnie, but I think it's better for being different.
For Stallone's later ones, Copland is great. I dig Lock Up a lot, too.

Yeah COP LAND is good. I haven't seen END OF DAYS or LOCK UP. I'll do that. I figure I'll get around to them all eventually. I know I've seen ERASURE but don't remember a thing abut it. I really liked LAST ACTION HERO at the time. I was the one. Not sure if I'd want to sit through it now but the idea was fun.

This thread has mad me want to watch RAMBO III again. I can't place why I like that movie I just do. It makes a good African desert double feature with RED SCORPION. I might watch CONAN(s) again too.

He really does. He's always been a handsome man. Gives me hope for KING CONAN. Oh please god, don't fuck this up.
