I've seen GWAR probably 8 times, the last being Halloween 2012, and was looking forward to this year's tour. Even convinced a neighbor to go with me in exchange for me going to a Phish show with him...guess he's off the hook now...

This really hurts. Brockie/Oderus was GWAR, pure and simple. He cannot be replaced and the band has effectively died with him. What makes this such a fucking bummer is that they were still making good records and even though the shows weren't as bat shit crazy as in the 90's they were still fun. They made a fucking unbelievable comeback with Violence has Arrived - like a lot of people who were fans of the second and third albums I stopped caring around This Toilet Earth and fully expected them to fade away after that. They completely turned that around though and became one of the best metal bands of the last 15 years and Brockie truly was a powerful vocalist, up there with Tom Araya, Matt Pike and even Lemmy on a good day.

Ian didn't want to crack wise but I will - why do members of GWAR keep dying while Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley continue to shit on stages around the world?

There's no justice in this world.

Agreed that Brockie was a killer vocalist. He had a lot more range than I think a lot of people probably realize. He could be comedic and over the top but when he wanted to sound pissed off or, yeah, genuinely scary, he could pull that off better than 99% of his peers.

    From Jack Flanagan (GWAR's manager):

“On behalf of Dave Brockie’s family, Slave Pit Inc. and GWAR, we would like to thank all the loyal fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and support shown to us over the past few days. Knowing that we have such amazing family, friends and fans is truly helping us all get through this tough time.

We are awaiting a toxicology report from the medical examiners office to confirm the cause of death. The medical examiners office has informed us that the results can take one to three months to be processed. Standard protocol exists that a toxicology procedure be performed.

We have made funeral arrangements and a private memorial has been scheduled for close friends and family.

As Dave and Oderus would have wanted, this year’s GWAR-B-Q scheduled for August 16th at Hadad’s Lake (7900 Osborne Turnpike Richmond, VA) will still take place as planned. We have scheduled the Dave Brockie public memorial to take place the day prior to the GWAR-B-Q, Friday August 15th, also at Hadad’s Lake.

More information shall be released as the details are confirmed.”

Been watching this tonight in memory of Dave. Totally forget Gibby Haynes had a cameo in it.

    It's all in the reflexes.

This is some great fucking shit right here...

The whole show is rad but jump to 14:45 to see Brockie tear shit up on "Crack in the Egg". It's insane to think that intense, animated performance was going on under that mask for the last 20+ years.

(ignore the bass player's Mudvayne 'do)

I wonder if they ever went as far as to dress up in the recording studio to get in the full mood. I mean, if bands like The Temptations even did the dance moves while in the studio, well...why not the costumes too?
