    Eastern Promises (Cronenberg, 2007)

Man. I can not believe that I waited so long to see this film. With a few exceptions, I'm generally just receptive to Cronenberg....I very much like SCANNERS and NAKED LUNCH, and there's nothing that I dislike by him, but I'm just, "well, alright" to the majority of his stuff.

EASTERN PROMISES is amazing. For what seems like a straight ahead crime film, it's incredibly detailed with every scene framed perfectly, and a cast that is perfectly suited to every line of dialogue in the film. It's the first film of his that I've compared to David Lynch because Lynch does the same thing...nails entire films like this, where there's not one moment that lets you down. Viggo is fricken AWESOME in this flick. Everyone is awesome in this flick. The storyline is pretty basic, but it's every other aspect of the movie that makes it so great.

    The violence is BRUTAL.

Man. I can't even fully describe it, just what a great film.

Yeah, Viggo and Cronenberg really do make an unexpectedly good team. I dug this one way more than I thought I would too. It makes a great companion piece to the earlier History Of Violence (see that if you haven't, Mark).

And the violence, you're right. It's used really powerfully here, not exploitatively, and it has seriously heavy impact.

I should rewatch this. It's been a few years but I remember being fairly blown away by it then.

There's a lot of Viggo dong on there as well, haha. I saw HISTORY OF VIOLENCE in the theatre, and I agree, it's a good companion film.

Of course, I watched it on Netflix Argentina, so for the scenes with a lot of Russian, I got Argentinian subtitles. Still, I like to think that I knew what was going on.

The VPN that I use allows you to switch Netflix Regions, which is how we get the superior selection available in the US. Despite the superior selection, however, EASTERN PROMISES is not available on Netflix US. Nor is it available on Netflix Canada (go figure) or Netflix UK. So I randomly switched to Argentina, where I found it. Interestingly enough, Netflix Argentina also has a healthy selection of blaxploitation flicks.

The downside is that because English is obviously not their first language, there are no English subtitles, though you can get them in whatever dialects they speak down there.

True, but if all of my movie shelves fell in at once, they wouldn't kill me and 6 other people haha.
